Advocates Harmeet Grewal, Deepinder Nalwa Sworn In As Additional Judges Of Punjab & Haryana High Court

Advocates Harmeet Singh Grewal and Deepinder Singh Nalwa took oath as Additional Judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday, February 17. The Union Law Ministry had issued an official notification on February 12, announcing their appointment.

In October 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium had proposed the names of five advocates—Harmeet Singh Grewal, Deepinder Singh Nalwa, Sumeet Goel, Sudeepti Sharma, and Kirti Singh—for appointment as Additional Judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. While the other three advocates were appointed in November 2023, Grewal and Nalwa’s appointments were delayed.

The Collegium, in its resolution passed in November 2024, noted that on April 21, 2023, the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, after consulting the two senior-most judges, had recommended these names for elevation. The Chief Ministers and Governors of Punjab and Haryana had also endorsed the proposal. Regarding Harmeet Singh Grewal, the Collegium highlighted that two out of three consultee-judges had unanimously supported his appointment, affirming his suitability for the role. Similarly, in the case of Deepinder Singh Nalwa, all three consultee-judges had unanimously endorsed his elevation, emphasizing his extensive legal practice, which is evident from the substantial number of reported judgments in cases he has handled.

With these appointments, the total number of judges in the Punjab and Haryana High Court rises to 53, while the sanctioned strength remains 85.
