The Bar Council of India (BCI) has directed the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh to suspend all elections of district and local bar associations in the state between November 15, 2025, and February 15, 2026, to ensure the smooth and orderly conduct of the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Bar Council elections scheduled during that period.
In an official communication dated October 25, 2025, signed by Srimanto Sen, Principal Secretary, Bar Council of India, the apex body instructed the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council to inform all Bar Associations across the state not to hold or notify any elections during the specified three-month window. The direction was issued as per the instructions of the Hon’ble Chairman of the Bar Council of India. The BCI emphasized that the temporary embargo was essential to prevent overlapping electoral activities that could disrupt the main Bar Council election process. “This temporary embargo is necessary to avoid overlap and to ensure that the electoral process of the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council proceeds without distraction or conflicting schedules,” the communication stated.
The BCI has also instructed the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council to issue an immediate circular communicating this restriction to all Bar Associations in the state and to ensure its wide dissemination. In addition, the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council has been directed to obtain confirmation of compliance from every Bar Association and to submit a consolidated compliance report to the Bar Council of India within ten days. The communication, issued from the BCI’s office at 21, Rouse Avenue Institutional Area, New Delhi, reiterates the Council’s commitment to ensuring that the electoral process in Uttar Pradesh remains transparent, conflict-free, and efficiently managed.
