The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has taken cognisance of a complaint filed against budget airline IndiGo in connection with the widespread flight disruptions witnessed across the country in recent weeks. The disruptions affected passengers across multiple routes and led to large-scale delays, cancellations and missed connections.

In a press release dated December 18, 2025, the competition watchdog stated that it had conducted a preliminary assessment of the information placed before it and decided to proceed further in the matter under the provisions of the Competition Act, 2002. The CCI clarified that the matter is currently at a preliminary stage.

The development follows a major operational breakdown at IndiGo, which coincided with a period of peak travel demand. The airline had attributed the disruptions to a combination of technical issues, crew constraints and air traffic congestion, resulting in significant inconvenience to passengers across the aviation network.

While the CCI has not disclosed the specific allegations contained in the complaint, the information filed before it arises from these mass disruptions and their impact on passengers and the functioning of the aviation sector. The Commission’s decision to proceed further indicates that it has found sufficient grounds to examine the matter more closely.

The CCI emphasised that its decision at this stage does not amount to any finding of contravention or wrongdoing by the airline. Under the competition law framework, the Commission is empowered to examine whether an enterprise has abused its dominant position or engaged in practices that adversely affect competition or consumer interest. The matter will now be examined further by the CCI in accordance with law.
