The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has appointed Delhi-based criminal lawyer Shri Singh as the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) to conduct the trial in the Pahalgam terror attack case. According to a notification issued on October 28, Shri Singh has been authorized to represent the National Investigation Agency (NIA) before both the NIA Special Court, Jammu, and the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. His appointment will be effective for a period of three years or until the completion of the trial, whichever occurs earlier.

Earlier, on September 18, a Jammu court granted the NIA a 45-day extension to complete its investigation into the attack. That period is now nearing its end, and a chargesheet is expected to be filed shortly. The terror attack at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam on April 22 resulted in the tragic deaths of 25 tourists and a pony operator, making it one of the deadliest and most shocking terror incidents to occur in Jammu and Kashmir in recent years. The appointment of Shri Singh as the Special Public Prosecutor signals the Centre’s intent to expedite the trial in this high-profile case and ensure that those responsible for the heinous attack are brought to justice.
