New Chief Justices For Bombay and Delhi High Courts

The Central government has cleared the appointment of new Chief Justices for the Bombay and Delhi High Courts.

 

Justice Alok Aradhe to Lead the Bombay High Court

Justice Alok Aradhe, the current Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. A notification from the Department of Justice stated, "In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to transfer Shri Justice Alok Aradhe, Chief Justice, Telangana High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court."

 

Justice Aradhe, who replaces Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya, will assume charge soon. Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya has been transferred to the Delhi High Court. Justice Aradhe began his judicial career in 2009 as an additional judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court and became a permanent judge in 2011. Over the years, he served in various capacities, including Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir in 2018 and Acting Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court in 2022. He was elevated as Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court in July 2023.

 

Justice DK Upadhyaya to Head the Delhi High Court

Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, the current Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. The Department of Justice notification read, "In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to transfer Shri Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice, Bombay High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court."

 

Justice Upadhyaya enrolled as a lawyer in 1991 and practiced before the Allahabad High Court. He was appointed as a judge of the Allahabad High Court in November 2011 and became a permanent judge in August 2013. Justice Upadhyaya was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on July 29, 2023, before his transfer to Delhi. He succeeds Acting Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru at the Delhi High Court, which currently has 35 judges against a sanctioned strength of 60.
