The Rajasthan High Court has granted six months’ temporary bail to self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, who is currently serving a life sentence for the rape of a minor girl. A Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma and Justice Sangeeta Sharma passed the order while hearing Asaram’s plea seeking extension of temporary bail on humanitarian and medical grounds, in line with the conditions previously set by the Supreme Court of India.

Asaram, also known as Ashumal, was convicted in 2018 for the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl at his Jodhpur ashram in 2013 and has been serving life imprisonment since. Due to his deteriorating health, the Supreme Court had earlier granted him interim bail till March 31, 2025, exclusively for medical treatment. Subsequently, the Gujarat High Court, on March 28, 2025, extended his interim bail for an additional three months, considering the requirement of continued specialized medical supervision.

In a related development, Asaram’s son Narayan Sai, who was convicted in 2019 for rape and other offences, was granted five days’ temporary bail by the Gujarat High Court in June 2025 to visit his ailing father—marking their first meeting since Sai’s incarceration in 2013. The Rajasthan High Court clarified that Asaram’s temporary bail would be subject to the conditions earlier imposed by the Supreme Court. It is noteworthy that this is the eighth bail application filed by Asaram Bapu since his conviction.
