52 Judicial Members Appointed to GSTAT

In a major development towards operationalizing the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT), the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions—Department of Personnel & Training, under the Secretariat of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet—has officially notified the appointment of 52 Judicial Members to various State Benches of GSTAT across India.

The appointments are made under the approval of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) dated August 4, 2025. As per the notification, each Judicial Member is appointed for a fixed term of four years, with a monthly salary of ₹2,25,000, or until attaining the age of 67 years, whichever is earlier.

 

Justice (Retd.) Mayank Kumar Jain Appointed to Principal Bench

Justice (Retd.) Mayank Kumar Jain, former Judge of the Allahabad High Court, has been appointed as Judicial Member of the Principal Bench, GSTAT, New Delhi. His appointment signifies the Centre's intention to provide experienced judicial leadership at the apex level of the Tribunal structure.

 

Appointments Across States and Diverse Legal Backgrounds

The newly appointed Judicial Members come from an impressive range of judicial and legal backgrounds. The list includes retired High Court judges, retired District and Sessions Judges, members of existing tribunals, and seasoned practicing advocates. Some notable appointees include:

  2. Bhaskar Reddy Vemireddy, Designated Senior Advocate, Telangana High Court

  3. Atul Madhukar Kurhekar, Retired Judge and Former Secretary General, Supreme Court of India

  4. Gunvantlal Manchanddas Patel, President In-Charge, Gujarat VAT Tribunal

  5. P. Dinesha, Practicing Advocate and Judicial Member, CESTAT

  6. Ramesh Nair, Judicial Member, CESTAT, Ahmedabad

  7. Justice (Retd.) Roopesh Chandra Varshney, Retired Judge, Madhya Pradesh High Court

  8. Shailaja Shashikant Sawant, Judicial Member, Maharashtra Sales Tax Tribunal

  9. Sushil Kumar Sharma, Judicial Member, Madhya Pradesh Arbitration Tribunal

  10. Vishesh Sharma, Retired District & Sessions Judge, UP, and Chairman, Permanent Lok Adalat, Jhansi
