The Supreme Court Collegium, in its meeting held on January 7, 2025, unanimously recommended the appointment of Justice K. Vinod Chandran, the Chief Justice of the High Court of Judicature at Patna, as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. The Collegium considered Justice Chandran’s extensive judicial experience, seniority, and the lack of representation from the Kerala High Court in the current composition of the Supreme Court.
Justice K. Vinod Chandran was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Kerala on November 8, 2011. Over an illustrious career spanning more than 11 years as a High Court Judge and over a year as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, Justice Chandran has demonstrated expertise in diverse fields of law. His judicial tenure includes handling complex cases across various domains, contributing to his reputation as an accomplished jurist.
Elevated as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court on March 29, 2023, Justice Chandran has been serving as the head of one of the larger High Courts in India. During this tenure, his judicial leadership has been instrumental in ensuring effective adjudication and administrative efficiency within the judiciary. The Collegium specifically noted that Justice Chandran stands first in the seniority list of Judges from the Kerala High Court and occupies the 13th position in the combined all-India seniority of High Court Judges.
The Collegium, while recommending his elevation to the Supreme Court, acknowledged that the Supreme Court Bench currently lacks representation from the Kerala High Court.
In its official statement, the Collegium stated, "The Collegium has, therefore, unanimously recommended that Mr. Justice K. Vinod Chandran be appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India."
