From the Editor's Desk
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has nominated Supreme Court Judge Justice J. K. Maheshwari as the new Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC). His appointment will take effect from November 24, 2025.
A notification issued on November 20, under Section 3A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, formalised the appointment.
The SCLSC plays a crucial role in ensuring free legal aid for eligible litigants and facilitating access to justice before the Supreme Court. As Chairman, Justice Maheshwari will be responsible for guiding the Committee’s operations, policy directions, and legal aid programmes in line with the objectives of the Legal Services Authorities Act.
Justice Maheshwari succeeds Justice Vikram Nath, who has now been appointed as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
Justice Maheshwari, a sitting Supreme Court judge since 2021, has earlier served as Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court and as a judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
