In an unusual incident at the Supreme Court on Monday morning, proceedings were briefly interrupted when a man attempted to throw an object at Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai during the session.

According to witnesses, the individual, who was dressed in a lawyer’s robe, entered the courtroom and shouted slogans before being swiftly restrained and escorted out by security personnel. The disruption lasted only a few minutes before the session resumed.

Eyewitness accounts differed on what the man tried to throw. Some lawyers reported he hurled a shoe, while others said it appeared to be a roll of paper. As he was being removed, the man shouted, “Sanatan Dharam ka apmaan nahi sahega Hindustan” (“India will not tolerate disrespect towards Sanatan Dharma”).

Despite the incident, Chief Justice Gavai remained calm and unfazed. Urging the courtroom to maintain focus, he told the next lawyer to continue with submissions, remarking, “Don’t get distracted. We are not distracted by this.”

Court officials have yet to release details about the individual or the motive behind the disruption. Security arrangements at the Supreme Court were reportedly reviewed following the episode.
