SC Collegium Recommends Elevation of Justice N.V. Anjaria, Justice Vijay Bishnoi and Justice A.S. Chandurkar as Supreme Court Judges

The Supreme Court Collegium, in its meeting held on May 26, 2025, has recommended the elevation of the following Chief Justices / Judge from various High Courts to the Supreme Court of India. The names proposed are:
Justice N.V. Anjaria, Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court (Parent High Court: Gujarat High Court). Born on March 23, 1965, in Ahmedabad, Justice Anjaria hails from a family with a rich legal lineage — his father also served in the judiciary. After graduating from H.L. College of Commerce and completing his LL.B. from Sir L.A. Shah Law College in 1988, he earned an LL.M. from University School of Law, Ahmedabad in 1989.
He began his legal practice in the Gujarat High Court in August 1988 under the mentorship of Shri S.N. Shelat, Senior Advocate. His areas of practice included constitutional law, civil disputes, labour, and service matters. Over the years, he served as Standing Counsel for numerous state bodies and was associated with premier institutions including the CBI, BSNL, UPSC, UGC, AICTE, and NCTE.
He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Gujarat High Court on November 21, 2011, and became a Permanent Judge on September 6, 2013. Justice Anjaria took oath as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court on February 25, 2024.
Justice Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court (Parent High Court: Rajasthan High Court). Born on March 26, 1964, in Jodhpur and enrolled as an advocate on July 8, 1989. He built a versatile legal practice at the Rajasthan High Court and the Central Administrative Tribunal, handling civil, criminal, constitutional, service, and election-related cases.
He served in key government legal roles, including as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel (2000–2004), and represented numerous departments of the Rajasthan Government and PSUs such as NHAI, BPCL, BSNL, and major electricity boards. He was also counsel for educational institutions like Jai Narain Vyas University and Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology.
Appointed as an Additional Judge of the Rajasthan High Court on January 8, 2013, he became a Permanent Judge on January 7, 2015. He assumed office as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court on February 5, 2024.
Justice A.S. Chandurkar, Judge, Bombay High Court. Born on April 7, 1965, Justice Chandurkar completed his early education at St. Vincent’s High School and pursued higher studies at Ness Wadia College and ILS Law College, Pune. After joining the Bar on July 21, 1988, he trained under Senior Advocate B.N. Naik in Mumbai before shifting to Nagpur in 1992, where he practiced across multiple courts.
He has written two legal commentaries: one on The Maharashtra Municipal Council Nagar Panchayats & Industrial Townships Act, 1965, and another on The Maharashtra Rent Control Act, 1999. Justice Chandurkar was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on June 21, 2013.
