Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Five New High Court Chief Justices

The Supreme Court collegium, in a meeting held on Thursday, recommended the elevation of five sitting High Court judges as Chief Justices across different High Courts, according to an official statement.

Under the recommendations, Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta of the Allahabad High Court has been proposed as Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court, with the move linked to the incumbent Chief Justice’s scheduled retirement on January 9, 2026. Justice Revati P. Mohite Dere of the Bombay High Court has been recommended as Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, “consequent upon transfer of incumbent Chief Justice.” The collegium also recommended Justice M.S. Sonak, also of the Bombay High Court, as Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court, citing the incumbent Chief Justice’s retirement on January 8, 2026.

The other recommendations include Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque of the Kerala High Court for appointment as Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court, and Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo of the Orissa High Court for appointment as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.
