The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice Harish Tandon, a Judge of the Calcutta High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court. This decision was made in light of the vacancy that arose following the retirement of Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh on January 19, 2025. The recommendation is based on an evaluation of merit, judicial competence, and seniority.
Justice Harish Tandon was born on November 16, 1964. He graduated from Calcutta University in 1983 and completed his LLB from the same university in 1989. He was enrolled as an advocate on September 26, 1989, and began practicing at the Calcutta High Court. During his legal career, he specialized in civil and constitutional matters, primarily practicing on the Appellate Side of the High Court. He also appeared before the City Civil Court, Debt Recovery Tribunal, and the Supreme Court of India.
Justice Tandon was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Calcutta High Court on April 13, 2010, and has served there since. He currently holds the seventh position in the all-India seniority list of High Court Judges, including Chief Justices. The Collegium noted that he has extensive experience in dispensing justice and is recognized for his competence, integrity, and judicial acumen.
Taking all relevant factors into consideration, the Collegium unanimously resolved that Justice Harish Tandon is fit and suitable in all respects to be appointed as the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court.
