Two Additional Judges of Gauhati High Court Elevated as Permanent Judges

The Union Government has elevated two Additional Judges of the Gauhati High Court to the position of permanent judges. The appointments, effective upon their assumption of charge, were made under Article 217(1) of the Constitution of India.


The notification, issued on January 17, 2025, stated: “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint S/Shri Justices (i) Kardak Ete and (ii) Mridul Kumar Kalita, Additional Judges of the Gauhati High Court, to be Judges of that High Court with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices.”

 

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended these appointments on January 7, 2025. Both judges were initially appointed as Additional Judges of the Gauhati High Court in 2023.

 

Justice Kardak Ete was elevated as an Additional Judge on March 13, 2023. He holds an LL.B from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, and began his legal career in 1999. He served as Additional Advocate General for Arunachal Pradesh in 2011, Senior Additional Advocate General in 2016, and Acting Advocate General in 2021. He was designated a Senior Advocate in 2014.

 

Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita, elevated as an Additional Judge on April 20, 2023, earned his B.Sc. from Arya Vidyapeeth College, Guwahati, and completed his LL.B and LL.M at Gauhati University. After enrolling as an advocate in 1994, he practiced in district courts for four years and served as a lecturer at J.B. Law College, Guwahati. He joined the Assam Judicial Service in 2000.
