Union Government Extends R Venkataramani’s Term as Attorney General for Two More Years.

The Union government has approved a two-year extension for Senior Advocate R Venkataramani to continue as Attorney General for India.

 

Venkataramani, who assumed the post in 2022 following the tenure of KK Venugopal, was originally set to complete his three-year term on September 30.

Born in Pondicherry on April 13, 1950, Venkataramani entered the legal profession in July 1977 after enrolling with the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu. He shifted his practice to the Supreme Court in 1979 and was elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate in 1997.

During his career, he has served twice as a member of the Law Commission of India, in 2010 and 2013. He has represented the central government, several state administrations, universities and public sector enterprises in matters before the Supreme Court and various High Courts.

 

Under Article 76(1) of the Constitution, the Attorney General of India is appointed by the President on the recommendation of the central government.
